Imagining the Possibilities

Inner City Aboriginal Network

This two page action document from the Inner City Aboriginal Network came out of the Downtown Eastside Local Area Planning Process, compliments of the Urban Aboriginal Sub Committee which created the document and got the endorsement of the Downtown Eastside Local Area Planning Process. The document was then taken to the Mayor’s Urban Aboriginal Advisory Committee, now known as the Urban Aboriginal People’s Advisory Committee for their endorsement and support.

Through our collective work and community forums these actions came forward. I will not go into detail on the items but I can assure you that many of us are trying to ensure these and other actions are happening to move forward through all the networks, too many to list. Big thanks to Councillor Andrea Reimer, City of Vancouver’s Urban Aboriginal Peoples Advisory Committee co-chairs Steven Eastman and Lillian Howard, director Penny Irons, Senior Policy Planner Tom Wanklin,  UBC School of Community and Regional Planning Nathan Edelson, Inner City Economic Strategy Hendrick Hoekima, and Hastings Crossing Wes Regan. The list just goes on. So many good people doing great work through place based principles.

Urban Aboriginal peoples share many success stories, be it the single mother completing her education; our youth getting into higher education; youth leaders working with the broader community; women who are standing up for social justice; men who are working and active in family life; or our elders who are bringing their wisdom to the broader community through song, dance, drumming, or engaging in learning circles. We believe we have a great deal to offer to make Vancouver a more inclusive and vibrant city — a city where all peoples learn and share and raise their families in all 24 neighbourhoods.
