risk1 The Downtown Eastside community has the highest concentration of artists per capita in Canada. Although the community has many art galleries and places to experience and engage in the visual arts, there is a limited amount of space for the exploration, rehearsal, performance, and experience of the performing arts for the people of the Downtown Eastside.

The arts enhance education, promote health and healing, create connections and communities, contribute to our economic strength and employment growth, and stimulate discussion and creative thinking.
Research has demonstrated that engaging in cultural and creative activities contributes to personal health and well being, to improving community identity and social cohesion, and to the vitalization and development of inner city communities.

The Downtown Eastside Centre for the Arts will contribute to improving the lives of members of our community and to the cultural development of our community by providing opportunities for personal creative development, and for the creative expression and experience of our community.

The Downtown Eastside Centre for the Arts will create places for exploring and experiencing the arts that reflect the community and provide opportunities that are open for everyone with an interest in participating, contributing, or becoming engaged in the personal, cultural, and social development of the community.
